Confronting India’s IT irony

By Vipin V Nair

Vipin_80I’m Vipin, principal correspondent with The Hindu Business Line newspaper, India’s second largest financial daily, where I’ve worked since 1999.

Before moving to my home state of Kerala early last year (which, incidentally, was described by National Geographic as one of the world’s top 50 'places of a lifetime'), I was in New Delhi, covering information technology. From the Y2K bug to the dot-com phenomenon and the current outsourcing boom, I have written extensively on India's IT industry.

During this time, what has struck me the most is the following irony that confronts India: it is considered a ‘software powerhouse' that churns out software codes for the world, yet the overall use of computers and technology for the benefit of its own people is abysmally low.

I’m really excited about participating in and covering WSIS. I hope to take back a great deal of information and ideas from the Summit, besides meeting up with people who want to bring about a positive change in our society through their thoughts and actions.
