A focus on communication rights
I'm a 43-year-old Brazilian journalist, and have been working in the media for over 20 years. I’ve reported for a range of news and broadcasting companies including the BBC World Service in London, Folha de Sao Paulo – a major newspaper in Brazil, and Reuters' Sao Paulo office. I’m now head of radio at Radiobras (a public communication company), coordinating the company’s four radio stations.
I’m really into social issues and communication for development. For my master’s degree I looked at the role of community radio in highly-developed media markets, and spent several months in Heliopolis, Sao Paulo – the second largest shanty town (or ‘favela’) in Latin America.
Seeing people living in these conditions made me realise the crucial role radio can play, particularly for poor communities. So, while I recognise the importance of ICTs for development, for me it’s communication rights that must be a fundamental focus. I hope to come back from WSIS more aware of the fight against digital exclusion, with new ideas and more solid arguments on communications rights.
See you soon...
