As well as writing a column with the Sunday Standard newspaper of Nairobi, Kenya, I’m a lecturer in journalism at Coventry University (UK). I’ve largely worked as a print journalist, but have also had brief stints as a radio reporter for the Voice of America’s East Africa bureau.
My interest in ICTs essentially stems from my academic work. My PhD thesis looked at ICTs and democracy in Kenya and Zambia, and I have written extensively on the role of ICTs in African development – from the use of mobile phones to digital media.
I was lucky enough to attend the first phase of WSIS, writing for the Daily Nation (Nairobi), as well as representing the US Social Science Research Council's IT & Civil Society Network. I hope the Tunis phase of the Summit will result in mutual consensus on internet governance and greater commitments on ICT infrastructure funding.
On a personal level, I hope to network with other journalists and participants to gain insights, information and contacts for future projects and collaborations – both on the journalistic and academic fronts!
